How to Style Culottes

How to Style Culottes

By the looks of this weather, the majority of the Summer has passed us by, but there’s one item of clothing which can still work on slightly cooler days as we transition into Autumn and that is the Culotte.

I bloody love em, as a person who practically lives in jeans for the rest of the year, they are the perfect warm weather alternative. You still get the coverage of a trouser (I’m super nesh) and they look very jazzy when you swish them about and I feel like a member of ABBA. However I’m very aware that some people do struggle to style them, so today I thought I’d show how I like to wear my FIVE pairs.

Now because this style is pushing the boat out for me as it is, you will notice all of my culottes are either black or striped, if that’s not your bag and you like a bit of colour, that’s okay, but if you want to learn how to dress up like a skunk, then read on. I’m also going to try and link the items or ones very similar so you can shop them for yourself.

  1. Formal

My very first pair of Culottes that I owned (as an adult) were from Misguided, they are a black, thick heavy material, making them perfect for a night out in winter. As the material is thicker, they have less movement, which to me gives them their formal appearance. I like to team them with a bodysuit, like the red one pictured here and my leather jacket, alongside my lace up black sandals for a smarter evening look. You could also tuck in a shirt if you wanted them as summer office wear. My other evening look pairs a floral vintage bardot top, which would be perfect for holidays.

2. Bananas in Pyjamas

This blue and white striped pair of Culottes from Mango are very thin and floaty, I think they look lovely with white especially if you have a tan. Because of the thin crepe-like material they are less suited to a baggy t-shirt or dark bodysuit, so a light slim fit top would work best. I’ve teamed the outfit with my White Converse to make it more casual, although obviously it could easily be dressed up with heels or sandals.

3. Linen

Now I love this pair but they are a pain in the arse to iron. Also from Mango, you may have spotted these alongside the striped pair in my London/ Budapest Haul. Due to the material they can be worn with a detailed top, like this vintage rework from COW or teamed with longer sleeves for a more casual transitional look. This time I’ve paired my Floral Mules with each outfit.

4. Super Casual

You will have seen this style around, the pleated trouser truly bringing back the 90’s, mine are a simple black pair from New Look, although my friends do sport them in a variety of colours including gold and blush pink. If you need a pair of trousers to go and eat an all you can eat buffet in, these are them. They are super comfy and stretchy and are so easy to chuck on to run errands, they are also probably my most worn pair, intact I’m wearing them right now as I write this. As they are so casual I like to team them with my Black Converse, a striped t-shirt or band t-shirt and my denim jacket on cooler days.

5. Tie Waist

My final pair are some of my favourites, this black and white striped pair from Zara are super comfy and oversized. They have a paper-bag, tie waist which again makes them super comfy and I also think they make my legs look pretty long. My favourite style with these is with a slogan t-shirt, my favourite being this topshop one, I wore this whole look on my birthday this year.

So there you have it, a few ways I like to wear my favourite summer style, as the temperature drops I will probably just add more jackets or swap a t-shirt for a long sleeve so I can continue to wear them!

A special thanks to Amy for following me around trying to get photos in the horrendous lighting, I think she did a pretty good job considering. Check out her Youtube Channel to see her blog featuring the day. Let me know in the comments what you think about this kind of post and also how you like to wear your own culottes!

I LOVE the idea of wearing culottes with converse. I have never worn culottes because I struggle with finding shoes to go with them without making my short little legs look stubby, but I really love your outfits with striped culottes and I am definitely going to be purchasing a pair!

Thankyou!! I was also worried about them making my legs look short as I’m only 5’4 but most of them sit high enough on the waist that it doesn’t really matter what shoes you wear! I hope you find a nice pair x

I’ve been seeing culottes a lot more recently, I love how many different kinds there are! My personal favourite was the blue and white striped ones, the aptly named “Bananas in Pyjamas” 😂
