I am quite the creature of habit when it comes to makeup, I used to buy new products constantly and never wore the same look two days running, but now I feel I know what I enjoy using and wearing. Over time this has come to mean a nude or neutral lip or just simply a lip balm, I get very dry lips so often lipstick formulas make my lips look even worse so I just avoid applying them.
However recently my lips seem to be in better shape despite the cold weather (All thanks to Glossier Balm dot com) so I’ve been branching out back into the realm of lipsticks. I used to have a colour for every occasion but then last year I purged my makeup collection in order to get it down to a manageable amount which was majority cruelty-free, many lipsticks which had barely been touched made their way to new homes leaving me with a handful remaining. Now that I’m starting to enjoy wearing lipsticks again I thought I’d share with you what survived the cull, I now have around 10, to some that may seem ridiculous and far too many, other people may wonder how I can survive with such little choice. For me I find it a happy medium, just the right amount so that I have choice but i’m not overwhelmed when it comes to finishing up my face. So here’s what I’ve got.
As you may have guessed I’m a fan of this formula so i have it in four different shades, they are also an absolute bargain at £6 so well worth a try. My favourites are Copenhagen, a berry tone that’s perfect for Autumn and Stockholm, my ‘my lips but better’ colour (we all have one). These lip creams last reasonably well although they probably will need to be reapplied after eating. However I like these as they don’t feel heavy or cakey on my lips yet they have good colour pay off. I’m a little on the fence about Ibiza and Istanbul as they are a little more pink, I get complemented when I wear them and they’re great for holidays but I don’t immediately grab for them. I think I’m going to put them out on show for the next few weeks and if I don’t wear them it might be time to let them go.
This is an absolute fave of mine, the perfect nude. It’s a funny colour as I see it as both brown and pink, the Suedes have a thicker formula than the Soft Matte Lip Creams but they do last longer. This can last me a whole day without having to reapply so a great formula for nights out. They come in a large range of colours from nudes to bright orange so there’s something for everyone
This is my most recent makeup purchase, which I picked up in Sephora whilst in Barcelona. The good thing is the Kat Von D range is cruelty-free so this was a guilt free purchase, I’ve also heard fab things about this lipstick formula. Liquid Lipsticks can often be quite drying but so far this hasn’t caused my lips to look a state so that’s always a plus. It’s almost like a terracotta nude which I think is rather season appropriate, to me this seems a good evening lipstick as it doesn’t seem to budge once it’s dried so would be great for eating a meal or going for drinks.
This is another colour I’m going to monitor to see if I wear, it is similar to Lolita II however I rarely wear it, I seem to prefer the consistency of my other NYX products so maybe it’s not for me, I do know some people who swear by the Lip lingerie so it’s probably best to try them all out for yourself to determine your favourites.
This one I’ve had for a couple of years as i received it as a Christmas gift, I’m aware it isn’t cruelty-free so i am on the lookout for a dupe. Obviously the colour is gorgeous but what I really like about this lipstick is how hydrating it feels, this lipstick keeps my lips looking sleek and plump. Obviously as it is more creamy it needs reapplying more often than a matte one may do but i don’t mind. The packaging feels very luxurious and I will be sad when this is finished as unfortunately I will not be repurchasing!
Again my other 2 lipsticks to survive the before mentioned purge, mainly because I need to find a replacement. Captive is a lovely purple/ berry tone which I think suits my pale skin quite well and as it is satin it isn’t drying, I actually find it similar to the Chanel formula. Whereas Velvet Teddy is a nude matte colour, I like this for nights out as it does not budge, this one is a cult classic that I am looking to replace, please let me know if you can think of a cruelly-free dupe as i really want to see the back of my remaining two Mac products.
I picked up this Burt’s Bees Lipstick on my Boots Advantage Card as a little treat because I realised as we approach Christmas that I didn’t own a red lipstick at all. This is a sheer, moisturising lipstick so if you are a bit hesitant about wearing a bold red lip this may be for you. This lip colour builds well so you can still achieve a statement look if you apply a couple of layers but I no longer face the dreaded dry lip I experienced with Mac Ruby Woo- does anyone else think that is THE driest lipstick in the world? Unlike Mac the Burt’s Bees formula feels nourishing and I have been complemented on this shade multiple times! *Update* Since writing this post I have treated myself to 2 new shades, my perfect nude Blush Basin and a lovely berry tone, Wine Wave because I just loved this one so much.
So there you have it all of my lipstick options, what is your favourite lip colour to wear? Please comment with any suggestions you may have for when I use up what I already have!
