So as some of you may remember I decided that I was going to attempt a capsule wardrobe earlier on this year. The basic premise is that you swap out your clothes seasonally so that they are weather appropriate (and so you don’t get bored of them) and you try to reduce your shopping. These swaps happen every 3 months when the seasons turn, then if there are some pieces missing from your wardrobe you can add things in accordingly but within reason.
I saw the largest increase in shopping between Summer and Autumn where there is the biggest drop in temperature, I realised I had no jumpers that were fit for wearing anymore and therefore had to go on a bit of a shop. However I put thought into what I was buying, I was armed with a list which I stuck to and I haven’t been impulsively sale shopping. obviously in winter in the UK it’s still freezing but it’s not as drastic a change from Autumn.
So before the next 3 months of winter (December, January and February) begin and I’m banned from shopping, I wrote myself a list of what I still thought I was lacking. Yet again I used the Capsule Wardrobe Planner from Un-Fancy to help plan out what I was missing, what brands and materials I wanted and what I haven’t been wearing. Although I got a few jumpers last time I still wanted a couple more, preferably turtle necks, one thick and warm and one thinner to wear underneath pinafore dresses and to tuck into skirts. Another thing I do is to screenshot clothes that I like and revisit them after a few weeks/ months to see if I still like them.
So onto the things that I actually picked up this time around for my Winter Capsule, I knew I wanted some longer sleeve, smart evening/ occasion wear. Having been at Uni for the past two years, most of my evening wear is more suitable for a club but I’ve been lacking that ‘nice top’ to go with my jeans when I attend meals, Blogger events and date nights. I’d spied a couple of blouses that I really liked from Topshop and Mango which were both polka print with ruffles so I decided to pick them both up. I like these because they can be worn with jeans and heels or tucked into a skirt.
Talking of skirts, I picked up a Topshop Vinyl Skirt recently, I was considering this piece for a while as it’s a bit different for me but I think I’ll get plenty of wear out of it for nights out and also paired with a oversized jumper for a more relaxed look in the daytime. I like the idea of having a different texture to my usual choice of jeans or a denim skirt.
With me still being a student I do still go on nights out so I was also keeping my eyes open for warmer alternatives for the cold winter months so I also picked up a Long Sleeve Velvet Playsuit from Urban Outfitters. Now this one I bought in October, a bit early during my technical ban, but I have already worn it twice and I already know when I’ll be wearing it for a third time so I’m going to allow it as I’m definitely going to get my wear out of it. The velvet material is super warm and only my legs are exposed and it can be worn with tights as it’s navy.
Next, onto the jumpers. I stuck to my list and got the two I set out to buy, the first one that I grabbed was actually from Marks & Spencer. It’s a black ribbed roll neck, tight fit jumper which is thin enough to tuck into skirts but is very warm. I have barely taken this off since buying it so I know it was worth the £17. The other jumper was more expensive but is a much heavier material, again I went for black to go with the bulk of my wardrobe, it’s an oversized turtle neck from & Other Stories and it literally feels like I’m wearing a blanket. This ticked the box of being super warm and I will probably wear it in a slouchy style over jeans.
My final purchase for the winter months is a pinafore, I picked up this teal number in Mango whilst in Barcelona. Although not strictly on my list I know this was a good choice as I never take my denim pinafore dresses off so I like the style, the colour is pretty and the material is nice and thick so therefore warm. You may have noticed by now that being warm comes above all else in winter, this is the girl who wore her ski thermals on a night out to West Street Live because she was cold.
So there is my Winter Capsule wardrobe, what’s new in and how I’ve been finding the whole concept so far. Let me know if you do a similar thing with your clothes in the comments below!
