So you’ve decided you’d like to use some more sustainable health and beauty products. One of the first questions you might ask is which eco friendly deodorant is best or the most sustainable?
I tried a few different eco friendly and cruelty-free deodorants out so that you don’t have to. Here’s a run down of which ones I tried and what I thought about them.
Why is it hard to choose a good eco friendly deodorant?
Natural Deodorants are an absolute minefield for so many reasons, including:
- Not many are available in shops.
- Greenwashing by big brands make their products sound more “green” than they actually are.
- Deodorants may be cruelty-free or aluminium-free but not plastic-free, so can they be classed as sustainable?
- Deodorants may be plastic-free but ineffective and not suit your body or skin. At this point you’d likely buy an alternative which defeats the object.
So which did I try, and more importantly which did I like?
We Love The Planet Deodorant
We Love The Planet was one of the first natural deodorants I tried. I had a couple of scents and it was okay. It scored well for being plastic-free as they came in a cardboard tube. They were inexpensive and came in a variety of scents. However I didn’t love the way they applied to my skin, I noticed some marks on my clothes and I didn’t feel as “protected” as I would have with my old favourite Mitchum.
Wild Refillable Deodorant
Wild is a deodorant brand has been doing the rounds on instagram recently and I would say it is worth the hype. This is a subscription service to a cruelty-free and single use plastic-free deodorant. You select which scents you’d like and the frequency you’d like the refills delivered. You can pause or cancel the subscription at anytime and can also choose the colour of your aluminium case.
This brand is sustainable, it provides cartridges that are compostable, are delivered in recyclable packaging and and the scents are lovely! I would say that with its’ creamy consistency it took me a while to get used to it. I’ve always used an aerosol so it’s a bit of a transition but after a while I got used to it. I have noticed that it’s not the most affective when I’ve done a lot of exercise but for day to day I really like it!
Salt of the Earth Deodorant
Salt of the Earth is available for a really good price in high street shops and online. It comes in a few scents as well as unscented if you’re sensitive to fragrance. The scents are pleasant and I would say that this is long lasting. This is the best cruelty-free deodorant for exercising that I have tried. It is applied as a spray and it lasts all day. I didn’t notice any smell or sweat marks when using this. It is vegan, gentle and easy to purchase in high street stores.
The only downside for this brand is that it is not plastic-free, however what I would say is that you can purchase large refill bottles so that you don’t have to repurchase the spray bottle each time. However since trying this I have seen they now sell a balm in a jar so there are lot’s more options available from this brand!
So which Eco-friendly Deodorant is best?
So I would say tat my overall favourite is Wild. It’s convenient to get the refills delivered to your door and it gives you the opportunity to try different scents periodically. It’s also in a handy case so easy to pop into a handbag too. If you are doing lots of exercise or prefer a spray I would go for Salt of the Earth and choose the large refill bottles to reduce the environmental impact and make sure to recycle them or choose the balms.
